Test Drive

A performance at the High Desert Test Sites in Joshua Tree. The work began with 250 feet of gold-and-magenta fringe that I unfurled into the wild Santa Ana winds. I balanced on the trunk of a Camaro convertible while Christopher Bennell drove at top speed down a sandy desert road. The car became both stage and instrument. A belt secured a selfie stick to the passenger seat headrest. A lo-fi rig. Christopher sped past our fixed camera position while I released the material into the air. It blustered and whipped, briefly triumphant, before surrendering to gravity and the desert’s insistence. The fringe tangled itself in brambles, tore against thorns, and scattered into glittering fragments across the sand.

Test Drive was a study in velocity in the Santa Ana winds.
